Thinking of trying Reflexology? World Reflexology Week Offer.

So, what is reflexology? And how can reflexology help? Here are 9 potential Reflexology benefits to think about.

Reflexology Benefits Manchester - Holistics by Kay

Reflexology is a gentle treatment which is carried out on the feet but also on the hands, face or even ears. I carry out reflexology on the feet at Holistics by Kay.

This holistic therapy is based on the principle that reflex points in the feet correspond to different areas in the body and reflexology zones. Reflexologists work these reflexology zones or reflexes with their thumbs and fingers using specialised techniques to help correct imbalances throughout the body and help release blocked energy.

There are over 7000 nerve endings in each foot and so incredibly sensitive! Reflexology also incorporates massage techniques and I incorporate breathing to help relaxation. These can help with stress relief, self- healing and promote relaxation. Have you tried reflexology yet?

Check out these 9 fabulous benefits of reflexology:

1. Relaxation and anxiety. Reflexology is a non intrusive therapy which most people find very relaxing. It allows the body a chance to relax and recharge and take time out of our busy lives in a calming environment. Reflexology helps to release the feel good hormones.

2. Ease sore feet. We often take our feet for granted. It is estimated we walk an average of 75,000 miles in our lifetime. Our feet take the strain and weight of our body. Reflexology uses massage and stretches in the session which may help to relieve sore tired feet and give this part of the body, which is often overlooked, some much needed attention and relief.

3. Toxins: In a reflexology session, massage techniques are also used and massage may help improve the blood flow and circulation through the body which may then help the organs to do their job of detoxifying the body. This is how reflexology may help to “release toxins”

Why is it important to get rid of toxins? We are constantly exposed to toxins in our everyday life – poor quality foods, pesticide spraying, chemicals in cosmetics / household cleaners, air pollution etc and for the body to stay healthy it needs to clear these. There may be a build up of toxins if not removed effectively and create health problems such as digestive issues, weight gain, fatigue etc. It is important to understand how toxins leave the body and support the body’s natural detoxification processes. The liver, kidneys, lungs and digestive system all help to remove toxins.

4. Helps improve circulation. Massage as mentioned above may help to improve circulation. There are 2 main types of circulation – the circulation of the lymph and blood flow. If circulation is poor the body may experience tightness, swelling and pain - massage may help to improve these symptoms.

5. Support general pain relief. I have had clients come for support with issues such as plantar fasciitis, PMS, muscle & joint pain to see if reflexology can help.

When in pain, it is difficult to even think about relaxing, let alone trying to actually relax. Reflexology may help create that state of relaxation which can help to break this cycle. Reflexology can help to release the feel good hormones, endorphins which can in turn may help to lessen the feeling of pain.

6. Improve mood and general feeling of wellbeing. Reflexology may help stress-related conditions which in turn will help to improve your feeling of well-being which may then help our energy levels and outlook on everyday life.

7. Reflexology pregnancy benefits. Pregnancy studies have shown that reflexology may be beneficial in pregnancy in terms of labour length, pain and help with post-partum recovery times. Aswell, as all the other benefits mentioned throughout this article. I offer pregnancy reflexology from the 2nd trimester onwards and it is great to have throughout the pregnancy. Increasing frequency from around 38 weeks to weekly sessions to help the body prepare for labour and help with this often anxious time. Its a great way to schedule in some "me time".

8. Sleep is essential to our health and wellbeing. Sleep allows your body and mind to recharge. If you don’t get enough sleep the brain can not function properly and we can become less alert, lose concentration and affect our memory.

Having regular sleep will also help your immune system to function at its best and be able to fight off illnesses better. Check out this blog I wrote on sleep here.

Reflexology can help to relax the body to encourage a good night’s sleep. Some clients even have a little sleep during the session!

9. Balance. The aim of reflexology is to bring the body back into balance – homeostasis. When the body is in balance it will be functioning at its best and being most efficient which will help our overall feeling of wellbeing.

How often should I have reflexology?

A frequently asked reflexology question is – how often should I have reflexology? The frequency of the treatment is a personal choice. However, if you are looking to support a particular issue then I would usually recommend starting with weekly sessions for the first 4-6 treatments and then come once a month for maintenance. If coming for general well-being, often clients may come once or twice a month. The benefits of having regular reflexology is that it cumulative and builds over time.

Reflexologists do not claim to cure, prescribe or diagnose and should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.
