Reflexology

This is page outlines what reflexology is for general health and wellbeing. Reflexology is a natural and gentle approach to help improve our wellbeing. For more specialised reflexology please also see pages for Pregnancy Reflexology and Fertility Reflexology.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy based on the principle that reflex points on the feet (or hands) correspond to areas throughout the body - reflexology zones.  Reflexologists work these reflexes / zones  with their thumbs and fingers using specialised massage techniques  to help correct imbalances throughout the body and help release blocked energy. The feet are incredibly sensitive with over 7000 nerve endings in each foot! This in turn can help promote relaxation, stress relief and self healing in the body.

A brief history of reflexology

An early form of reflexology is said to have been used by the Chinese more than 5000 years ago in their pressure therapies. These ancient forms of foot massage were based on principles that energy zones run throughout the body. These principles were further developed in the early 19th century and expanded by practitioners such as Dr William Fitzgerald and Eunice Ingham. Reflexology was introduced to Britain in the early 1960's and its popularity continues to grow.

A consultation will be carried out before the treatment to check if there are any contra - indications (anything which would prevent treatment) or if the treatment will need to be adapted. Each treatment is tailored to the your individual needs.

In some circumstances your doctor's consent may be required before treatments can commence. If you are pregnant, please consult with your midwife or doctor before booking a massage or reflexology treatment.

Reflexologists do not claim to cure, prescribe or diagnose and should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.

What happens when I go for a foot reflexology treatment?

A comprehensive consultation will be taken, including your medical history, and we will discuss the benefits to be achieved.

As just the feet are being worked, you will remain fully clothed and simply remove your shoes and socks. You will be invited to relax on a reclining chair. Your feet will be cleansed at the start of the treatment and then a variety of reflexology, massage, relaxation and accupressure techniques will be used depending on your individual needs. The treatment lasts approximately one hour including consultation. On your first visit, please allow around 1 hour 20 minutes as detailed consultation will be required.

Who can have reflexology?

Foot Reflexology is a non intrusive complementary therapy which is suitable for most people. However, occasionally there may be times when it is not suitable.

How often should I have reflexology?

This can be discussed once you've had a consultation. In general, for someone new to reflexology who is looking to support a particular condition with reflexology having the first 4-6 treatments weekly is ideal as reflexology is culminative.  And then move towards monthly sessions.

However, that is not always possible with time and expense and a client may come as often as they feel the need or come monthly from the beginning.

How can reflexology help?

Circulation

Good circulation in the body is vital for bringing oxygen and nutrients to the cells and also removing toxins. Stress and tension can restrict circulation causing the body to become more sluggish. Foot Reflexology may help improve circulation and lymph flow which encourages the body's removal of toxins and impurities. This helps the body to restore its equilibrum / its balance - naturally.

Stress

With increasing levels of stress in every day life, more and more people are taking control of their own health needs. If the body is under prolonged stress, the body is less capable of fighting illness and so more prone to becoming ill. This may affect your health and wellbeing which in turn may make life harder in other areas such as your work life, relationships and home life.

Reflexology may be one of the ways to help mitigate the stresses of today's busy and hectic modern life as the treatment aids deep relaxation for both the body and the mind. The treatment can be relaxing but also can be changed to be more invigorating to increase energy levels if this is the desired outcome.

After a treatment, clients have reported feeling relaxed, their mood and sense of well being improved. They often have a great night's sleep and have felt more productive and energised the following day.

Aftercare

Clients should try to rest after the treatment and avoid alcohol and caffeine as these have a stimulating effect. These are also toxins which we are trying to help remove. Resting will help your body's natural healing process and also drinking plenty of water will help remove toxins from the body.
